An employee from Iowa Homeland Security and Emergency Management (HSEM) has been deployed to Alaska to support recovery efforts following a series of catastrophic storms that devastated multiple regions within the state in October 2025. This deployment is facilitated through the Emergency Management Assistance Compact (EMAC), a nationwide mutual aid agreement.
The Iowa HSEM representative will serve as a Recovery Housing Liaison Officer, supporting and coordinating recovery housing activities. The deployment is expected to last up to 17 days.
"Emergency response knows no borders,” said John Benson, Director of the Iowa Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management. "Through the Emergency Management Assistance Compact, we're able to offer our specialized knowledge in recovery housing to help Alaskans recover after these devastating storms."
The Emergency Management Assistance Compact (EMAC) is a state-to-state mutual aid system that enables states to share resources and personnel in response to disasters or emergencies. EMAC members can deploy resources from all disciplines, receive reimbursement for mission-related costs, and ensure the safety of deployed personnel.
EMAC continues to play a critical role in supporting response and recovery efforts nationwide. This collaboration underscores the shared commitment to safeguard lives and protect property during emergencies and disasters.
