The State of Iowa Disaster Recovery Temporary Housing Program (DRTHP), established for Iowans affected by severe storms, tornadoes, and flooding in April, May, and June 2024, will end on May 14, 2025.
The program was created to provide a temporary sheltering option for eligible disaster survivors as they pursued long-term housing solutions. Since its inception in July 2024, the program has provided households with a safe place to live while they work on home repairs and other housing solutions.
"The Disaster Recovery Temporary Housing Program has provided shelter and assistance to 222 households while they recovered after last year’s storms,” said John Benson, Director of the Iowa Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management. “The State of Iowa is committed to supporting Iowans through available state and local programs as they continue to rebuild and recover.”
Over the course of the DRTHP, survivors have maintained regular communication with their assigned Shelter Coordinators to keep their status updated and recertify their eligibility for the program.
Survivors currently participating in the DRTHP have been informed about the program's closure, and Shelter Coordinators are working with these households to determine their next steps. This includes connecting survivors with the Disaster Case Advocacy Program, which provides one-on-one support to affected residents. Advocates work closely with households throughout the disaster recovery process, helping residents identify their disaster recovery needs, build a recovery plan, and access available resources.
All Iowans affected by the April, May, and June disasters are eligible for the Disaster Case Advocacy Program.
