The Iowa Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (HSEM) recognizes April 2025 as National 911 Education Month, and April 13-19 as National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week.
National 911 Education Month helps people of all ages understand why it's important to call or text 911 in emergencies and emphasizes the crucial role everyone plays in ensuring that emergency responses are effective and prompt during a crisis. During the month HSEM will share information and resources created to inform Iowans of all ages about 911.
βFor over five decades, 911 has served as the vital link between the American public and emergency services. Public education and awareness initiatives play a key role in the effectiveness of 911,β said Blake DeRouchey, 911 Program Manager. βThe resources available on the Ready Iowa website (www.ready.iowa.gov/know-your-911) are designed to help Iowans find information and age-appropriate 911 resources that may save lives.β
Iowaβs 911 telecommunicators are essential members of their community and often serve as the first point of contact in emergencies, providing assistance over the phone to those in distress.
"Iowa's 911 Telecommunicators are always ready to help people on their worst days," said DeRouchey. "They receive training to handle stressful calls and work around the clock, including nights, weekends, and holidays. 911 Telecommunicators play an important but often unseen role in keeping Iowans safe, and they are always there to provide emergency assistance when needed."
