Each September, Iowa celebrates National Preparedness Month, a time to recognize the importance of preparing for disasters and emergencies that can happen at any time.

During National Preparedness Month, the Iowa Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management is urging Iowans to take steps to ensure that they and their households are prepared. This includes becoming informed about the types of disasters and emergencies that may occur in their area, planning how to respond to emergencies, assembling an emergency supply kit, and discussing preparedness with household members, friends, and neighbors. Iowans are encouraged to visit ready.iowa.gov for more information.

"Iowans are no strangers to disasters, this year alone there have been severe storms, tornadoes, and flooding across large portions of the state," said John Benson, Director of the Iowa Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management. "It's important that we take steps to prepare ourselves, our households, and our communities."

Throughout the month, the Iowa Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management will be sharing weekly updates on social media with the following themes:

  • Week 1: Make a Plan
  • Week 2: Build a Kit
  • Week 3: Be Aware
  • Week 4: Additional Preparedness Considerations
