Radiological Emergency Preparedness (REP) Program

There are three nuclear power plants that operate within or close to Iowa’s borders. These plants are required by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission to support local and state preparedness activity and are required to hold full-scale exercises that involve state agencies every other year. The plants cover state costs to support these activities.

Iowa's only nuclear power station

Iowa’s only nuclear power station is the NextEra Energy-Duane Arnold Energy Center at Palo. Bordering plants include the Quad Cities Nuclear Station near Cordova, Ill., and the Cooper Nuclear Station near Brownsville, Neb. See map.

The commercial nuclear facility industry’s regulatory program mandates the “protection of the public health and safety of the citizenry” in the event of a serious incident at any of the four commercial nuclear power stations in and adjacent to the State of Iowa. Regulatory guidance from the NRC and FEMA (NUREG-0654/FEMA-REP-1), as well as additional subsequent guidance, directs state and local authorities to develop, implement and maintain plans and procedures to preclude the exposure of the public to harmful radionuclides. The REP program in Iowa ensures that emergency preparedness, planning, and exercise activities associated with the commercial nuclear power facilities in or around Iowa meet or exceed standards and regulations set by the federal government for the protection of the citizens of Iowa.
