Planning & Training Bureau Chief
Susan Dixon joined the Department in 2007. Her emergency management experience includes food and agriculture security planning, technical assistance for hazardous materials spills, hazard mitigation planning, disaster operations and liaison roles, and a two-year stint at the Rebuild Iowa Office as the director of long-term recovery in response to the flooding and severe storms of 2008.
Prior to coming to the Department, Ms. Dixon fulfilled several leadership and management positions at the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR), including senior environmental specialist, supervisor of the Contaminated Sites Section, and chief of the Land Quality Bureau. She also served as the DNR representative on the Iowa Emergency Response Commission. Her work at the Iowa DNR included surface water quality standards, contaminated and brownfield sites, landfills, leaking underground storage tanks, and the emergency response and hazardous materials programs.
In addition to her state government experience, Ms. Dixon was previously involved in local government in water and wastewater operations for the City of Huxley, Iowa. She also served as a senior project manager for Apex Environmental, Inc., a private consulting firm.
Ms. Dixon earned her B.S. in animal ecology with an emphasis on environmental science and water resources from Iowa State University. She has a Master of Public Administration from Drake University and recently completed her Master of Security Studies at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, Calif.
